Real Peace, Self-Help vs. Philosophy, Paradox of Desire
Three Point Thursday
Awareness.
You know what peace is when you realize you’re not separate from anything.
Self-help only helps to a certain point.
If you never graduate from reading self-help to reading great literature and philosophy, that is a tragedy. Put down the book about habits for now—as good as it may be—and go read some gut-wrenching Dostoevsky, some inspiring Arthur C. Clarke, or some moving Albert Camus. Think less about optimization, calendar blocks, and productivity hacks, and more about the nature of truth, art, and what it means to be human.
The paradox of desire.
“It is not good to want a thing too much. It sometimes drives the luck away. You must want it just enough, and you must be very tactful with Gods or the gods.”
—John Steinbeck, The Pearl
