Just had the pleasure of reading this and want to acknowledge that it's a wonderfully refreshing perspective. I'm often a big subscriber to the "always be able to answer the 'why'" mentality, and admittedly it's a pretty significant tenant in my writing.

But you're right. We can also be like Gump. Not everything needs an answer to that question, and sometimes a feeling is the only answer we need. Thanks for a great piece!

Hey Aaron, thank you for such a thoughtful comment. I am too. It’s Nietzsche’s great line right, “he who has a why can bear almost any how.” Or Seneca saying that “if a man knows not to which port he sails no wind is favorable.” I love those ideas. I was thinking much about the social perspective—not always feeling the need to explain the ‘why’ to other people. (As I ironically explain why I wrote this piece.) Appreciate you reading.

Taking a page from Forrest's, unexplained run shows that sometimes you don't need a big reason to do something you want.

“I just felt like it” is the forever freeing phrase to have prepared in your pocket.

This framework allows one to save energy. Thank you for this Jeff.

"Explaining yourself is often a waste of emotions and energy." - Never thought of it this way, but incredibly true
